Curiosity is interconnected to success in many different facets of life. Being curious motivates us to make new friends, pursue new passions, and learn new things. At Elite Scholars STEAM Academy, we encourage our students to be intellectually curious because we know that it is the best way to learn. Studies show that when people are curious about a topic, they retain more information. It has also been proven to be an integral part of academic performance. Therefore, it is crucial to help stimulate curiosity in your child. Here are some tips for showing the value of curiosity to your child from our learning academy in Fairview Heights, IL:
Ask questions
As a parent, you know that children learn from your example. When promoting curiosity in your child, start by modeling it yourself. Ask questions about topics you are personally curious about, and research the answers with your child. Foster critical thinking skills by asking your child, “Why do you think that is?”
Explore new places
Routine is good for children because it gives them a sense of stability and security. However, occasionally switching it up and taking the day to explore a new place fosters a sense of curiosity in your child. Take a day trip to a nearby city or town and explore with your child. Walk around, learn its history, and ask questions of locals. If a trip is not option, try exploring a local museum or park with the same intention.
Read together
Books are endless sources of information. The more your child reads, the more they will learn and want to learn more. Promote a love of reading by reading with your child. As you read, ask questions about the book; for example, ask your child how they think the book will end, or what the characters could have done differently.
